Archbishop Miller’s Statement on the Conflict Between Israel and Palestine

The escalation of violence in the Israel-Palestinian conflict is heartbreaking to witness, and the pain and suffering unfolding on both sides saddens me deeply. I offer my ongoing prayers for all affected, especially the wounded and the families who have lost loved ones. I also pray for peace, not only a short-term cessation of violence but a lasting peace based on a just reconciliation between people who have shared this holy land for thousands of years.

I am especially troubled to see violence and hatred stemming from this conflict now arising within our own country. In recent days, anti-Semitic incidents have taken place across Canada – a matter that has caused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to speak out against it.

Here in the Lower Mainland, I have been saddened to learn of reports of school and workplace bullying and intimidation toward members of the Jewish community.

The Archdiocese of Vancouver has always enjoyed a close relationship with our Jewish neighbours based on the values we share. We stand with B.C.’s Jewish community and condemn these acts of violence and intimidation. Just as Christians and Jews are called to love their neighbour as themselves (Lev 18:19), Canadians must reject hatred of every type. There is no place in Canada for bigotry and racism.

I offer the assurance of my prayers and friendship to our Jewish brothers and sisters.
